17 Weeks: In With The Old And Out With The New

Couple of new thing going on!!

First off, our RUG arrived!!

IMG_8047-2Blog

I absolutely love it. And love even more that it was only $75 at Urban Outfitters! Some of the other rugs I was considering were hundreds of dollars that I just didn’t want to spend.

IMG_8046-2Blog

Just like I expected from the reviews, it came folded up and took a few days to get the wrinkles out (they are still leaving..) and it was very thin and slippery, so I purchased an anti-slip pad to go underneath. I bought this one from Amazon for $39, bringing the total cost to about $120. Not bad at all considering the personality and functionality it brings!

IMG_8048-2Blog

We just have one MAJOR problem. I discovered last night that the pad and rug are now too high for the closet door to open!!! This means either sawing down the door (scary) or moving the rug (don’t wanna). I’m puzzled on what to do.

IMG_8056Blog

I decided to try out the Urban matching curtains, which were also very budget-friendly at $35 a pop. I bought two and hung them up for a trial to see how I liked them. Upon first glance, they were NOT THE SAME COLOR! The grey in the curtains is more blue and the rug is warmer. Not pleased.

Matt and I agreed they made the room too busy, so I decided to return them. We have 2 sets of white curtains in the attic we used at our old house that I think will give the room a simpler look. Out with the new.

IMG_8045-2Blog

I was thrilled to cross the cost of curtains off my budget list, however, I found a place to repurpose them!! My brain started cranking and they are now hanging in the basement! I’ve been hunting for curtains to replace the ones that came with the house (which I am not fond of) and these work very well! Unfortunately, instead of saving money, I had to buy a third, but I’m still very happy with the project’s outcome : )

More in-with-the-old! I found a My Breast Friend pillow – gently used – on Craigslist for $15!

IMG_8054-2Blog

Score!

IMG_8050-2Blog

And my friend Alex gave us a handful of her little boy clothes and a swaddle blanket! These are a few of them – cuteness! Thanks Alex!

IMG_8055-2Blog

Matt and I are having lots of fun playing with the little bear hat we bought for Baby KERF. Each of the bears have taken a turn wearing it and “spooking” each of us by hiding in funny places – like laundry baskets and drawers!

BOO!

17 Weeks: To Do List

I know, I know, I have PLENTY of time! But I’m a list-maker and anti-procrastinator. And I’d really like to get the bulk of things done in the second trimester so I can relax in the third!!

image

So I’m brainstorming things that I need to do before the baby comes. Please help me add to this list with anything I have overlooked!

Complete a baby registry and figure out what I am going to buy sooner rather than later

Purchase and assemble crib and mattress [gah organic mattresses are expensive!!!]

Finish making nursery décor decisions

Buy dresser, side table and some kind of rocker/chair/glider and assemble

Paint closet and figure out closet system of organization

Re-do ceiling fan

Hang curtains

Attend childbirth class, breastfeeding class, and baby care basics class (all scheduled!)

READ LOTS OF BOOKS!! I have about 5 I need to read, including Ina May Gaskin and Bradley Method

Baby proof the house

Buy a baby gate

Hire doula

Write a birth plan

Research baby health insurance

Research cord banking

Research local placenta encapsulation guru

Choose pediatrician

Buy things for postpartum – like nursing bras or nursing pads

Install car seat (once purchased!) and have it inspected

Wash all new things

Prepare cloth diaper system

Take a nap

Pack hospital bag (I know this is waaay too early, but it needs to be on the list!)

Am I missing anything major!?

17 Weeks: Live and Jive

If you hadn’t noticed, we’re blogging live now! Well, at least for the week. Running two blogs is even harder than I thought – but mostly because BERF takes a bit more focus and preparation to write. So I’ll probably always be a day or so ahead and will have some topical posts pre-written. I’m really enjoying the new blog though, and am so glad I decided to separate the two!

image image

I’m also still finding my groove for how I want to organic organize my thoughts each week. For the most part I’m doing 2 posts that are more physical/symptoms/bumps and that leaves 5 more topical posts, which is a lot to fill now that I have 7 slots per week to fill now! I might drop back to 5 posts a week – perhaps I will take off the weekends as I move forward. Or maybe just a photo of the day or something simple : )

So what’s happened since we last spoke?

Bump Update

I am still totally amazed at how it feels to have my body changing like this. It’s unlike any other experience I’ve gone through (obviously!) and I think the science of it all is still my favorite part of being pregnant (which will probably change once I can really interact with my baby from the outside!)

2012-03-27 13.35.33

There are multiple types of movements that I’ve felt….starting [I think] around week 12. I don’t think they’ve really changed much since I started to notice them that early, but I have noticed this week some new sensations that I’m feeling as I’m going throughout my day – a tap in the car, a vibration while I’m typing. Before I had to be completely still to feel them, but I’m starting to notice them more of the time. It’s weird though because if I’m moving too, it’s hard to know if what I felt was the baby or just a GI thing or my mind playing tricks on me!

Different movement feelings have included:

Vibration – A very, very faint vibration. Like I could tell something was moving inside of me but I had no idea how or what it was doing.

Tickling – This was also one of the first sensations I felt. A few times I woke up to tickling and wondered even if I had imagined it.

Taps – These are happening more and more. Just a tap or two taps in a row. Usually to the front of my stomach. They are very faint. I’m guessing these will turn into kicks?

Fishies – I can’t really describe this other than it feels like a bubble or fish is moving through liquid. Perhaps this is a roll or flip?

Stomach Drops – You know the feeling as you descend a roller-coaster when your stomach drops? I’ve felt this a handful of times randomly. I’m assuming it’s baby-related and it’s also the newest sensation.

The movements seem to be strongest at night. When I wake up in the morning, my body seems to be free of the water weight that accumulates during the day and my uterus is RIGHT near my skin and oh-so-huge and hard. I have also noticed that it’s totally lopsided!! I don’t think my little turnip is big enough to be hanging out on one side or another yet like babies do in the later months, so I have no idea. By the time I get up and going, it seems pretty even. Maybe I like to sleep on my right side more than my left and everything shifts!?

So when I wake up, I put my hands all over my belly and see what grew in the night. It changes so much day to day. MANY times I have put my hands there and felt some strong movements – until I realize I’m really just feeling my heartbeat in both my stomach and my fingertips!! Someday it will be a baby… : )

17 Weeks: Little Man

Two little reflections on finding out we’re having a little BOY!

Mini He

I was walking on the downtown mall this week and noticed a cute man pick up a little boy. They were dressed alike and looked alike, and that’s when it hit me: the best thing about having a little boy is that he is a little Matt! I’ve always known that having a child who was half Matt’s would mean so much to me, and having a boy gives him an edge on my female genes because he’s a boy.

Of course I realize our little boy might look more like me or act nothing like his dad, but there’s no denying that Matt’s genes will be in there and I’m sure some of him will come out, whether it’s via nature or nurture. Heck, even the bears have some of his male personality!

I Want To Write You A Love Song

Recently this song came onto my Norah Jones Pandora station:

The song is about a dog, but as I was listening, I missed the part about the “man” having “forefeet” and thought for a minute she could be singing to a baby!

You never lie and you don’t cheat
And you don’t have any baggage tied to your forefeet little feet
Do I deserve to be the one who will feed you breakfast, lunch and dinner
And take you to the park at dawn [in your BOB stroller]

I just love the jazzy song and had visions of me singing it as a lullaby to my little man someday.

Which got me thinking about all of the love songs in the world that you could probably apply to a baby boy!

Boy excitement is getting stronger!

17 Weeks: Lollipop Shop

We have a few great baby + kid sales here in Charlottesville, and this week I ventured to my first. BOY was it overwhelming!

IMG_7728BlogIMG_7730Blog

The former Whole Foods warehouse was just filled with clothes and gear.

I really had no idea what I was looking for. I was hoping to find perhaps a used B.O.B. stroller, baby carriers, cribs, dressers, and maybe a cute outfit for two. Unfortunately most of the stuff there was way more than gently used, too expensive or covered in primary colors and plastic.

IMG_7731Blog

I found this changing table in a pretty color, but I don’t really want a changing table (I’m doing a dresser with a changer on top) and the owners were asking $130 for this, which was more than I would have wanted to spend.

IMG_7733Blog

I never found any of the specific “modern” items I was hunting for – I think they must be Craigslisted or still being used. But I also just felt unprepared for the event. I really had no idea what I needed!! Even in the clothes world, I just didn’t know what was a good deal and what was overpriced or what I would need. So I ended up leaving empty handed, but I think this sale will be GREAT the next time it comes around and I have specific things on a list to look for.

IMG_7732Blog

I decided before I could really know what to buy used, I had to go look at the new stuff and make a list of what I need before I can hunt for bargains. [I did find My Breast Friend pillow on Craigslist for $15!]

Is it too soon for me to be parking in this spot!? I felt awkward without much of a bump, so I went a few spots up a regular one!

IMG_7735Blog

Babies R Us was overwhelming too, but at least I got a better idea of what’s out there. I’m hoping to bring a mom friend of mine back to help me consider some of the smaller stuff I might not even know I need.

IMG_7736Blog

I’ve also been browsing blog posts for “ Baby Must Haves.” They have been SO helpful! If you have a baby gear “must haves” blog post – please share!!

17 Weeks: The Shelf

17 weeks (1)

I’m continuing to grow and grow, and my appetite goes from nonexistent to ravenous day by day. It’s so unpredictable!

One thing I’ve noticed is that I’m starting to get a shelf on my bump. There’s a little hollow part between my ribs that is still the same parallel that it used to be pre-pregnancy, but my bump is starting to curve out from the top and I can imagine how it will be a few months from now when I have THE shelf to sit bowls of oatmeal upon : )

17 weeks (6)

Every morning when I wake up, I spent a few minutes poking around and seeing how things have changed during the night. And they always do seem to change! Sometimes it’s probably just my dinner water weight settling, but I swear that my uterus is also growing at record speed these days.

At my latest doctor’s appointment, I asked my doctor to show me exactly where my uterus was. I felt like it was getting really close [a few inches] from my belly button, but that seemed to be a bit higher than one would expect at 16.5 weeks during the appointment. But she confirmed that my guess was correct, and today, the top is just under my belly button. I have a very short torso, so I think that’s why it’s crept up faster on me than a really tall woman’s might.

Fundalheight

Larbs is quite a few inches taller than I am, but her height is all torso! Our hipbones are nearly the same height.

IMG_2580-2Blog

Matt says my stomach feels like a big balloon! It’s weird that you just can’t imagine what it will feel like to have this big organ growing out and up like this until it happens. It’s hard like a muscle (with a little mush on top 🙂 ).

17 weeks (3)

Compare the weeks:

6 Weeks (2) - Copy 12 weeks (6) - Copy15-weeks-(3) 17-weeks-(6)

I still can’t feel the baby on demand, but I can feel him when I lie completely still when he’s the only thing moving in a room of stillness. When I’m moving or not concentrating, it’s kind of like trying to feel an earthquake while you’re on a rollercoaster, but in stillness, the slightest movements are detectable. It still feels like a wiggling mouse! I have felt what I think are a few light taps this week, but nothing I’d describe as a kick. I think I have a few more weeks to go before those start.

Now that I’m feeling much better and springtime is here, I can’t help but think of January + February as “The Dark Ages.” Days of darkness, coldness, nausea, gross foods, and just the blahs. I think it was actually a great time for the first trimester! Get it all over at once. I am SO glad to be moving onwards in the second tri and into this beautiful spring!

17 Weeks: Surprise Unveiled

If you didn’t figure it out, our secret mission to Richmond this week was for a special ultrasound!

It's A Boy!

When I first heard about 3D ultrasounds, I researched them in my area, hoping to do one in the third trimester for those cool 3D photos. I was surprised to find that they’re not nearly as expensive as I imagined they would be, and also – that they do sex determination for a very reasonable price. That got my mind cranking, and when I realized the “20 week find-out-what-it is” ultrasound at my doctor’s office wouldn’t be until I was nearly 23 weeks, going down just shy of 17 weeks sounded like lots of fun. And we’d find out our surprise a month and a half earlier!

We scheduled an appointment at Inner Child Imaging for their gender determination package of $99. Upon arrival, the owner Dave was there to greet us. He was super nice and escorted us into the imaging room where I sat in a recliner with a nice view of the plasma TV in front of us. You can actually bring a crowd if you’d like, and in the third tri they can make a DVD for you to share as well. I think it’s so cool to have a video you can show your child one day of when he/she was inside of you. I know I’d love to see that of myself – my mom barely even has any photos of her pregnant with me!

We opted for the 2D since it was less expensive and Dave said the baby would look kind of weird in 3D since it didn’t have the fat stores of the third trimester, but he was nice enough to switch to 3D a few times for us and we got several pretty cool photos! They are a bit hard to see because he’s so young, but still neat:

His face! [Although kind of obscured by hands!]

Dave had told me to hydrate well and eat something sugary before I got there – to ensure the baby was active. If I hadn’t been so full from lunch, I might have used that as a good excuse for an ice cream (!), but I settled on a piece of hard candy instead. The baby was quite active inside! Matt and I are always most amazed just watching the baby move around in there. So much personality comes to life!

Profile

The baby was sitting on his legs the whole first half of the scan. He had them tucked beneath him. Dave thought he saw a glimpse of what he was looking for in the first few minutes, but said he didn’t want to declare until he was sure. Matt and I both knew then that it was probably a BOY!

A little while later, after I drank some sugary juice and Dave wiggled the baby around a bit until his legs finally stretched out, until he suddenly declared: “YUP! You’re havin’ a boy!” He was sure of what he saw: little boy parts. He has only called the sex wrong on a boy once, and he was very sure this time, so we’re counting on it to be right.

Little legs

From Below

I can’t say that we were shocked – because we obviously knew that there was a 50% chance of boy or girl! But it was so weird to know and imagine a HIM in my head. The baby I had been imagining up until now -was genderless. Flip-flopping between boy and girl constantly. But once we knew, it was almost like I had a new baby to get to know, and it felt a little funny at first. Like he [the baby] knew more than I did. But by the end of the day, after pretty much non-stop thinking about him, he was mine again : ) And cuter than ever!

View from right profile, sitting up, arms wrapped around head: “No more photos, I’m not ready to come out!”

No Photos Please!

After we left the studio, we went shopping! Although we weren’t really hunting for anything in particular. We went to Baby GAP and I decided we should buy him something to celebrate the day when we first “met” him. All the clothes in Baby GAP were adorable!!! Little polo shirts and tons with little bears on the pockets. We decided on this silly knit bear hat – hopefully he can wear it home from the hospital and join his bear brothers!

IMG_7784

We had lots of fun telling our families that evening. Multiple Skype sessions were involved, and we handed Karen the stack of images and put the “It’s a boy!” on the bottom. Everyone was excited to know, but we’re keeping the name zipped tight until he’s born (although we still haven’t even decided).

mom

Lillian even got to get in a few excited meows! She is very excited to be an Aunt Kitty.

Lills

Matt’s dad is a radiologist and his wife, Cheryl, is in the medical field too, so we sent them the ultrasound photos, unlabeled, and had them guess the sex! They did a great job using medical terminology while reading the ultrasound photos over Skype, but it was a little hard to read a still photo 🙂 They were excited to see boy parts!

I know there are strong schools of thought about finding out versus waiting until the baby is born, but I am SO glad we did this. I don’t think it will change much about how we’re proceeding – the nursery colors will stay the same, and I like green and yellow and orange way more than I like pink or blue. But a bond has been created that wasn’t there before, and this makes the name decision much easier!
