33 Weeks: Worth The Weight

Weights (2)

A snippet from one of my pregnancy apps where I’ve been recording my weight at my doctor’s appointments : )

I have gained 17 pounds according to my doctors’ scale last week, but it’s probably closer to 20 if you count those first few weeks before my first appointment at 8 weeks. Since I don’t weigh myself at home, I don’t really have an official starting weight, but if you look at my 8 week photo, I don’t think I put on more than a couple of pounds, so I just subtracted 3 pounds from my 8 week weight to get a good start idea. Up ~20 total with 6 weeks to go. The normal range is 25-35, so I think I will end up right in the middle of that, or perhaps slightly less. [Gosh I should really shoot for a 26 pound gain!! How cool would that be!?]

As you see in the graph, I shot up a lot in the first trimester – above average – probably a combination of bloating and feeling so terrible and eating poorly. As soon as the second trimester hit, my weight gain slowed a lot. In fact, from weeks 16-20 I didn’t gain a single pound! I’m not sure how that happened. More vegetables, less cheese, I’d assume : ) As the baby has grown a lot more in the third trimester, I’ve gained about 3 pounds a month.

I really haven’t done anything differently with my diet. In fact, I’d say aside from a few isolated pockets of days and the temporary need for almonds at bedtime to sleep through the night, I have been LESS hungry than I was before I was pregnant!! I am 99% attributing this to a drastic reduction in exercise intensity. (And this makes me think twice about how much I was doing before too. Although I definitely miss the burn!)

I’ve definitely loosened up my diet a little bit – there is no need to cut back so much after a vacation or few days of overeating to balance it out because I don’t want to deprive the baby or feel hungry. But I’d say for the most part, my meals are only slightly bigger (or really if anything – they are smaller because of my stomach space reduction!) and I’m snacking either the same or less. I really imagined myself being famished throughout pregnancy like I was the days after a long run! But that hasn’t been the case.

I haven’t counted calories or anything to see where I’m ending up, but I would guess around 2,000-2,500 for a daily average. Considering in the third trimester calorie needs are ~450 additional, that makes sense. It’s all still a squiggly line if you listen to your hunger cues.

32 weeks-20

I’m always fascinated to see how the weight is piling on. I obviously haven’t gained 20 pounds of pure fat over these past 8ish months.

This site breaks it down as the following up delivery:

  • 7 – 9 pounds of baby
  • 2 pounds of placenta
  • 2 pounds of amniotic fluid
  • 4 – 5 pounds of increased blood volume
  • 2 pounds uterine enlargement
  • 3 – 4 pounds of fluid in maternal tissue
  • 1 pound of breast enlargement to prepare for breastfeeding
  • Any remaining pounds are a general deposit of fat required by the body for breastfeeding and energy stores

That’s 21 – 25 pounds worth of baby stuff with the rest as maternal fat stores (on D-day).

It’s pretty clear to me that I’ve put on some fat stores – in my arms and legs/hips/sides for sure. I’d guess my stomach too but it’s stretched so much it’s hard to tell! But I’m still curious to know what I’ve gained as pregnancy side effects/baby and what I’ve gained as fat. If I’m up about 20 pounds of baby etc. upon delivery, and gain close to 26, that’s about 6 pounds leftover of real fat (or possibly a little more) – and something that sounds totally manageable to take back off. But I guess I will just have to wait and see what happens! I’m in no rush at all to lose the weight, but I am hoping I will be back in most of my winter clothes by the winter (maternity can get me through the fall!) – contingent also on rib and hip structure changes!

Whatever the gain ends up being, it’s been worth the weight : )

33 Weeks: The Little Turtle

IMG_2065

As I’m now halfway through my 34th week (33 weeks down, working on 34), I can’t believe I only have about 6.5 weeks to go! I’m wondering if I should pack a hospital bag yet? It seems like a lot of time for a bag to sit, but then again the whole point in packing a bag ahead of time is to expect the unexpected. I do think it’s time to do the rest of the things on my to-do list – including biting the bullet and buying our stroller and carseat. I’ve had a lot of time to save for these two big purchases!

IMG_2049

I have a little turtle in there now : ) He loves to poke out a limb, a knee, a foot, his butt just like a little turtle head would poke out. He moves it around for a little and then the second I say to a friend “Hey feel this!!” the turtle goes back inside his shell. Sometimes I don’t even feel it from the inside but I’ll put my hand on my stomach and will feel a little knob poking out!

Just after my doctor said “It is very unlikely that he will turn this late in the game” I actually felt like he did turn for a day. Not necessarily a complete 180*, but I felt the turtle pokes on my left side and things were totally different. But within 24 hours, he seemed to settle back into his usual position with most of the movements on the upper right.

IMG_2048

Speaking of the upper right, my rib connection is KILLING me! My uterus sits right-side heavy and jabs up into my ribs all day long. This has been really irritating to the muscles (or whatever!) in that area. If I sit for too long it hurts, but if I stand for too long it pulls and hurts too. Really the only way for me to get relief is to lie on my left side and let everything sink to the left and away from the right. I’ve been trying to sleep on my left more, but sleeping is just so uncomfortable in general that it’s hard to do that.

I used to be able to sleep on 4 sides. Now I’m down to 1!! Last night I just could NOT get comfortable. But luckily I am still sleeping for most of the night and not having to get up to pee a ton.

IMG_2052

My lower back has bothered me a little bit this week too. In general I did really well on my car trip – it didn’t hurt too much during. I sat on a towel to keep my hips higher than my knees and keep my pelvis tilted down. But I’m wondering if today’s back pain might be a delayed response to 6 hours in 24 hours.

Another ailment (gosh I’m full of complaints this week!) is that I feel like his head – or just his weight – is pushing on my bladder (and possibly my cervix?) more and more. It’s mostly noticeable when I start out on a walk – like I get a few big jabs downward of pressure before things kind of settle out. It’s not all that painful, but it’s not comfortable either.

IMG_2058

But to end on a positive note, I’ve found that I love pregnancy more and more as time goes on. I just love being able to feel him and interact with him and have him feel big and strong inside of me. It’s sooo much better than those early weeks when I was sick and nervous and so far away from meeting him. Although I do have a list of physical complaints, all in all I’m still feeling good and don’t really have that “Get this baby out of me!” feeling yet. Perhaps that is around the corner, but I’m enjoying where I am right now.

33 Weeks: Thank You, Thank You

I am so thankful to be having two baby showers this summer. I have one under my belt and “write thank you notes” on my to-do list. Lots of them!

IMG_1934

A few weeks ago, I realized I was going to need to buy some note cards. I went to Target hoping to find something cute and something I could personalize. Rubber stamps are my craft of the year (that and spray painting!) I scored big with these Hot Hues brand cards – a pack of 50 was just $9.99 (why are note cards so expensive and only packaged in sets of 5 and 10!? Everyone needs packs of 50.) I loved the colors and knew I could make them even more special with a little stamping.

IMG_1933

My next step was to fine a baby-ish stamp. I searched Target and Amazon and found this one that wasn’t too cutesy (there are so many storks and baby animals and things). I love that it’s a double meaning – OH BOY I loved your gift and OH BOY we are having!

IMG_1935

I spent an evening with my big archival stamp pad stamping away at the cards…

IMG_1939

Not perfect, but that’s my favorite thing about a stamp!

IMG_1938

And now I am ready to get writing!

Speaking of stamps, that’s one thing I forgot to stock up on. To the post office!

33 Weeks: Always Coca-Cola

Baby KERF, who has been nicknamed Baker within our family until his real name is debuted, received a package in the mail this week from my mom, Grammie Buzz.

IMG_1854-2

Grammie recently visited the Coke museum in Atlanta and let me know she had purchased something red for the baby. She is a die-hard believer of real Coca-Cola for all kinds of ailments – from headaches to hangovers. She thinks it’s one of the best substances on earth!

He’ll have to wait a while until it fits him, but I bet it will be one of his favorite shirts ; )

IMG_1855-2

The card had me laughing out loud. “Don’t tell mom… Dad OK. Bears OK too.”

IMG_1856

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a little Coke at Grammie’s house : )

Our toy baskets are filling up!!

IMG_1849

We received some really fun things as gifts – including this yellow vintagey basket from our friend Chris!

IMG_1851-2

And this antique one my mom gave me filled with stuffed animals

IMG_1852

I tried to put these two in to play but they jumped right back out! “We are not stuffed!” they squealed.
